General Class Obligations

A. E-mailing.
Due to the amount of 'SPAM' we all get, you must place the name of the class as the subject of every e-mail.

Lecture Classes
101A = Tu/Th at 8 AM
101B = Tu/Th at 9:35 AM
101C = Fri. at 9:35 AM
101Z = Th at 6 PM (Accelerated Class)
101S = Summer Lecture

* Do not use 'Earth 101X' (the 'X' is the letter of YOUR class) or 'Q1 for 101X'. It is OK to put something AFTER the 101X but NEVER before it!! OK to use '101X assignment 1' or '101S Q2'.

* You may have to change the subject BEFORE you reply to me.

* There is a one week 'free grace period' for errors, week 2 = -5 points per e-mail,
week 3 and on = -10 points per e-mail. You will see these negative points under e-mail in your extra credit
.

B. Class Participation
Good manners are important in a large class.
* Talking, sleeping, working on other materials, having your cell phone or any electronics (including laptops) out, or general inattentiveness, etc. will not be tolerated.

Using a communication device during class is a zero tolerance incidence. You will be required to leave the class with loss of points for that day.

Penalties range from a simple verbal request to requiring the student to leave the class immediately and not return without first consulting with the Dean of Student Services depending on the severity and frequency as determined by the instructor.

* If you have just signed up for this course and do not attend or do the work on a regular basis, I will drop you.
This seems to be a favorite technique for those who need to be enrolled in a course for financial aid or to participate in some school activity.

* Students who get to class on time will receive class participation points for that day.

* A sign-in sheet or poll will be conducted during the class period for points.

* You must either sign the class participation sheet each time you come to class or check-in via the 'clickers'. Checking-in is YOUR responsibility!

Tardiness to Class

* Coming late to class or leaving early from class is VERY distracting. If there are circumstances where you must leave early, please inform me. Those arriving late will receive negative participation points in your extra credit section. Several of these will be dropped.

* Signing and leaving without notification is -10 participation extra credit points off with NO attendance points!!

* If you will be consistently late to class due to a reoccurring problem,
please complete the 'Late Form' during the first week of class.

C. Assignments
*Make sure you PRINT your name and the class code (101X) on all assignments.
* Working together will be covered on the next page.
* Students cheating on any assignment/quiz will receive a zero for that assignment.
A second occurrence will result in a 'F' for the course.
Students found cheating on an Exam will receive an F for the course.

D. Seating Charts
* There will be a seating chart for lecture classes, and it will be used. Therefore, always sit in your assigned seat. Not sitting in your assigned seat = -5 per day.

E. Contesting an assigned grade
* You have one week after an assignment is completed or a grade sheet is sent to discuss problems regarding that information. Otherwise, the information stands as being correct.

F. Adding / dropping a class.
* DROP/ADD IS A STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY!

I will not tolerate a student who does not participate actively in a class.
Some students secure a class just to keep eligibility for some type
of scholarship or award. This student will be dropped by the instructor.

G. Cell Phones/ iPod type players / Laptops / .
* Cell phones / iPod type players / Laptops off and away. NOT on the desktop. If you want to answer a call, take your stuff and leave the class. No phone use during class time. Nothing in your ear(s) during class time.
